Police Property and Evidence Custodian

Definition: Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine field and clerical work assignments in support of Police functions. Incumbents of this classification performance is evaluated through personal observations, accuracy and safety of assignments and discussion. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Knowledge of the operating procedures of a Police Department.
- Knowledge of the equipment used in property and evidence, records, including communications, computers, etc.
- Knowledge of the principles, codes, regulations, and laws governing records management.
- Knowledge of modern office procedures, techniques, and equipment including computer software
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of warehousing, inventory control, material handling, storage, record keeping and property accounting, computer terminal data input and retrieval process.
- Ability to learn applicable Tribal, State and Federal laws and civil codes and regulations pertaining to the handling and storage of property and evidence.
- Ability to learn policies, court systems and criminal procedures relative to the processing, retention, and disposal of evidence.
- Ability to maintain the integrity of the Property and Evidence Room by participating in random audits.
- Ability to utilize our computerized records management system documenting evidence data and procedures along with chain of custody procedures.
- Ability to learn safety and security methods and practices, involved in the handling and storage of motor vehicles, firearms, weapons, narcotics, drugs, money and dangerous devices.
- Ability to follow all health, safety and welfare training, policies, procedures and guidelines of the SRPMIC and best practices.
- Ability to maintain legible, complete, and accurate records and related documents.
- Ability to place property and evidence items and inventory documents in both ascending and descending order by computerized numerical bar codes.
- Ability to devise and maintain storage, security, and accounting procedures for sensitive, valuable, and unusual supplies and equipment.
- Ability to coordinate with other law enforcement agencies in the development of procedures for the disposition of property when cases are adjudicated.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors and other Tribal employees and members of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
- Ability to move/lift objects weighing at least 50 pounds short and long distances and different levels like placing items into a vehicle and the ability to walk up and down stairs.
- Ability to climb up and down a ladder of at least 15 feet in height with objects in hand.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or completion of a GED equivalent and a minimum of one year experience in property / evidence work, police work, warehousing, inventory control, or related field.
- Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling this position.
- Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member who closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
- Will be required to successfully pass pre-employment drug screening and fingerprint/background checks.
- Successful completion of Police Department background investigation and polygraph examinations.
- This position may be expected to work evenings, holidays, and weekends as needed and is not subject to a standard work schedule.
- Will be required to obtain CPR certification within 6 months of employment.
